Premarin (conjugated estrogens)

Premarin is used for treating certain menopause problems like burning, vaginal dryness, hot flashes and irritation. The drug is also prescribed for preventing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and prescribed for women who lack natural estrogen in the body.

The drug can be taken with meals or without meals. However, you have to take care not to miss any dose or not to take more than the amount that has been advised. An overdose can only increase the risk of side effects. Well, do not discontinue premarin medication in the middle of a course as this will only worsen your health conditions.

You should also discuss with the doctor all your allergic reactions and also all your medical conditions as this helps your doctor to decide on the right prescription that has to be given to you. Discuss with your doctor if are diabetic or have kidney/liver/heart diseases, benign breast nodule, depression, bone cancer, high blood pressure, epilepsy, endometrial cancer, gallbladder problems, pancreatitis, lupus and uterine fibroids.

It is better not to get pregnant while taking Premarin as the drug is known to cause birth defects. Breast feeding women should also avoid the drug as it is traced in breast milk.

Doctor’s do not prescribe the drug to children below 18 years of age. The drug is also not prescribed if you have vaginal bleeding, porphyria and circulation disorders.

When you are using premarin, avoid cigarettes as it only increases the risk of blood clots. You should also not miss any doctor’s appointment as he should have to constantly monitor your health conditions.
